Why are Dental Check ups Important?

A dental checkup essentially comprises a systematic examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth and preventive measures to prevent slight problems from becoming major ones. Along with maintaining optimum oral hygiene at home, regular dental checkups and cleanings at the dentist's office at least once every six months are crucial to prevent the onset of most oral diseases.

This will help to ensure that the ideal state of oral health is maintained and any unforeseen dental conditions are spotted in the initial stages before they get worse.

Nowadays, with the development in dental technology, dental examinations have become virtually pain-free and seamless.

The process of dental checkup begins with your dentist getting all the details about your general and oral health. This will help him to treat and diagnose problems more effectively; for example, diabetes can increase the risk of gum disease, certain medications can lead to dry mouth and cavities, etc.

What are the reasons you need regular dental checkups?

1.    Even if you take care of your dental health with proper brushing and flossing,  there are areas in the mouth where the plaque accumulates. Such areas need professional treatment to prevent tartar from eroding teeth or creating holes in them.

2.    Plaque and tartar collection can also cause infection to the gums causing gingivitis and periodontitis. The treatment of severe gum disease can include surgery, intense cleaning, and medication. Regular dental cleanings are essential in addressing gingivitis before it is too late to avoid such complex treatments.

3.   When a dentist professionally cleans your teeth, it will help to keep your teeth and gums healthy and avoid more significant health issues.

What do routine dental visits include?

  1. Oral cleaning: Oral cleaning involves the removal of the adhered tartar deposits from the teeth using ultrasonic scaling. Using the scaling device, the calcified tartar and the deposits are dislodged and washed away using a jet of water. The tooth roots are also cleaned using the same technique. Oral cleaning also helps to provide relief from gum disease by eliminating the bacterial accumulations on the teeth and gum.
  2. Dental fillings:Fillings are materials used to restore the teeth and are made from biocompatible, dental-grade ceramic or composite resin. If you have tooth decay, we will remove it from the cavity and disinfect it. Fillings are prepared to match the color of the teeth, placed in the cavity, shaped, and hardened using a curing light. If needed, the tooth will be trimmed and polished to improve its aesthetics.
  3. Preventive care:Preventive dentistry is one of the most vital things that happens during a dental checkup. It helps prevent common oral conditions even before they can develop. As a means of preventive care, x-ray diagnosis, salivary diagnosis, dental sealants, oral cleaning, fluoride treatment, etc., are provided.
  4. Oral cancer screening: During your dental visits, your dentist will examine for signs of mouth cancer, head cancer, and neck cancer.
  5. Oral hygiene guidance:Brushing and flossing the teeth at least twice daily is important to limit the growth of bacteria in the mouth and prevent oral diseases. During your dental checkups, your dentist can give you advice on the proper cleaning and brushing techniques.

Remember that in addition to the professional treatment, it is essential to maintain proper oral hygiene at home by regular brushing and flossing, limiting the consumption of highly acidic or sugary foods, and avoiding biting or chewing hard foods.
